Safe care at St. Francis

With the COVID-19 pandemic extending through 2020, we're committed to caring for our community.

St. Francis has taken multiple precautions to ensure your safety, while providing you with quality care, close to home.

It's nearly halfway through 2020, and though the first half of the year was filled with many uncertainties, you can always be certain that St. Francis has made your safety our highest priority. Because your health and wellness are important, it is crucial to continue with routine care you may have put off temporarily.

Caregivers at St. Francis, along with providers at Allina Health and HealthPartners/Park Nicollet, acknowledge that now is the time to make appointments for your maintenance care, annual physicals and critical care. We want you to stay healthy!

The events of the past six months may make you uneasy with the thought of visiting clinics and hospitals for routine care, or even for urgent and emergency care. We understand your concern, and our St. Francis family has been working behind the scenes to ensure the safety of you and your family. We've worked daily to continuously refine our facilities and practices based on guidelines from the Minnesota Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, all to keep you safe and comfortable in our care.

With many precautions in place, the care you receive St. Francis facilities, whether routine or urgent, is as safe as ever! When you visit the St. Francis campus, you may notice actions we’ve taken to help you feel safe and comfortable while you are in the care of our highly-skilled, compassionate caregivers.

The numerous safety protocols St. Francis has employed will mitigate the spread of COVID-19 while providing the necessary care for patients entering the facility include:

  • - Enhanced cleaning processes in all hospital areas including patient rooms, staff areas and public areas.

  • - Visitor restrictions, greatly minimizing the number of outside individuals entering the hospital while still providing necessary support to patients in certain situations.

  • - Greeters at every entrance to verbally screen all employees, patients, vendors and visitors for COVID-19 symptoms. If a patient screens positive for symptoms of COVID-19, they are taken directly to a room rather than waiting in a lobby. If a staff member, vendor or visitor screens positive, they are not allowed to enter.

  • - Physical distancing throughout the facility, including in staff break and work areas, and patient waiting areas. Barriers are constructed in the Emergency Department waiting area and Plexiglas windows are placed between staff and patients in check in areas.

  • - Masks are required throughout St. Francis facilities for all staff, patients, vendors and visitors, as is the use of other personal protective equipment recommended by the CDC for staff.

  • - Allina Health and Park Nicollet provide virtual care and guide patients to safe care in our community. Allina Health patients can call their clinic or visit Get Care Now for help navigating their care needs. Park Nicollet patients can call their clinic or visit

  • - Patient flow changes to route those with potential COVID-19 symptoms to separate areas of the Emergency Department and inpatient units to minimize the risk of exposure to patients coming to St. Francis for care.

  • - Numerous hand sanitizing stations placed strategically throughout the hospital for regular use by staff, patients, visitors and vendors.

As the situation develops over the coming months, hospital leaders will continue to follow all enhanced safety practices and the Minnesota Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s COVID-19 guidelines to keep our staff and patients safe.

Rest assured that St. Francis will constantly evolve to continue providing you with the safest, highest quality care in the months and years to come!
