Birthing

Neonatal Care Unit

The neonatal care unit at St. Francis is now taking care of higher-risk births and babies.

You can be confident that you and your baby will be in expert hands at St. Francis Family Birth Place. Adding to our skilled team of nurses, midwives and physicians is the expertise of Children’s Hospitals and Clinics.

St. Francis continues to have access to Children’s Hospitals and Clinics via telemedicine, but the experts are now also in the hospital. Neonatal nurse practitioners are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week to attend births when necessary at St. Francis. The neonatologists from Children’s are also here every day.

Under the guidance of Children’s and neonatologists from Minnesota Neonatal Physicians, some of the conditions now being treated in the level 2 special care nursery are:

  • Late preterm births.
  • Feeding immaturity.
  • Feeding intolerance.
  • Apnea and bradycardia spells.
  • Infections.
  • Temperature instability.
  • Hyperbilirubinemia requiring phototherapy.
  • Breathing difficulties requiring supplemental oxygen therapy.
  • Neonatal abstinence syndrome.
