Lymphedema is swelling caused by an abnormal accumulation of lymph fluid. This typically occurs in the arms or legs but can affect other regions of the body.

Lymphedema may result from a surgery of the lymph nodes or may be side effect of radiation. It may also occur as a result of injury, scarring, trauma, or infection of the lymphatic system. If left untreated, lymphedema may worsen, causing increased swelling, loss of function, and/or chronic infection.
