Cancer Education and Research

Education and research about your cancer diagnosis and treatment options is important for your recovery. Providers at St. Francis believe patients deserve to be full partners in their own health care. Not only does it empower the patient, but also allows care to be delivered more effectively and efficiently.

Pre-Chemotherapy Classes for Patients and Families

Nurses from the Cancer Center provide up-to-date information for St. Francis patients and their families in these free, one-hour classes. Here you’ll learn more about the chemotherapy treatment, what to expect, side effects and other important topics. Families are encouraged to attend to better understand what their loved one is experiencing, and how they can can best provide support. Class sizes are deliberately kept small to allow time for questions. You will be scheduled for this class before or early on in your treatment.

Clinical Research

The St. Francis Cancer Center works closely with other leaders in the Twin Cities to provide residents in our community access to the newest therapy available for cancer treatment, symptom management and cancer prevention. As members of the Metro Minnesota Community Clinical Oncology Program (MMCCOP), a non-profit research program sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and participating hospitals and clinics, the St. Francis Cancer Center can offer patients access to over 100 clinical trials available for most cancer types.

Dr. Joseph Leach, Medical Director of the St. Francis Cancer Center, is the associate principal investigator and chair of the management committee for the CCOP. Our research focuses on all aspects of oncology – testing new treatments for both early and late stage cancer, preventative studies to try to reduce the incidence of cancer and symptom management studies to try to reduce the impact of cancer and cancer treatment on quality of life

For more information on participating in a clinical trial through St. Francis, call (952) 428-4131.
